Somatic Therapy
Somatic therapy is such a gentle way of being oneself.
For some of us, we are disconnected from our felt sense. Maybe you had to manage or tend to those around you earlier in life. Maybe having needs wasn’t always safe or welcomed. This is where guided focusing can come in.
What is a “felt sense”?
Have you ever left your house and had a sense of “what did I forget?” You know that sensation or sense of “I know I forgot something…” You can feel it in your body and once you remember, “oh, I forgot to unplug the [insert whatever here]” or “I forgot to send off that email.” Once you realize it, you might even notice a shift in the body as you now have some clarity or awareness.
Guided focusing fosters this awareness and attunement to the felt sense. It is really just a way of being with yourself. This can offer so much ease and clarity and allow you to listen to your own innate wisdom. There can be great ease by listening deeply to oneself. This is an incredible way of being and goes beyond “coping.” While coping skills can be incredibly valuable, I firmly believe coping through life is not enough. You desire more depth and steadiness and want to be fully present with all the “things” that arise without having to cope.
Guided focusing draws on components of mindfulness or meditation, but it goes beyond awareness and fosters a connection to your present moment experience, allowing you to fully embrace it.
People who intellectualize or spend a lot of time in the mind, can benefit from guided focusing.
